As part of our special auctions that occur every five weeks, our Scottish Contemporary Art Auction on the 22nd June saw many attractive and desirable paintings go under the hammer, with a good few reaching and exceeding their auction estimates.

In particular, this eerie looking oil on hardboard by John Bellany showing a peculiar looking man playing an accordion sold for a fantastic £24,000. Bellany is a highly respected Scottish painter with many of successful paintings and a unique style in this field. This particular piece had never been publicly exhibited or offered at auction before appearing at McTear’s and definitely caused a lot of excitement in the auction house. It was noted that “The Accordionist” was painted not long after Bellany’s trip to Buchenwald where he encountered a very traumatic experience, which could explain the eeriness of the painting.

Lot 1781: "The Accordionist"
Sadly, Bellanny past away last year but his paintings will maintain and prolong the memories people hold of him and his work.

This opulent pair of Royal Doulton gilt blue porcelain pedestal vases and covers is set to get under the hammer for £100-£150 in the auction. This would be a great statement addition to any mantelpiece.

An Auctioned Packed April...

Well we really sprung into spring with our special April auctions. On top of the usual ‘3 days of auction’, McTear’s had another 3 unique auctions featuring various pieces of Victorian, Edwardian & Scottish Jewellery, Miniature Spirits and works of art.

All taking place on the 17th of April, The Miniature Spirits Auction kicked off the day of auctions at 10.30am. This auction included 103 pieces of Miniature bottles of Whisky, Gin, Vodka, Rum and Port, with most lots meeting their estimation and a few exceeding them. An example of this would be this Whisky Miniature Ceramic Selection which has some well known items such as a 12 year old Springbank and a 21 year old Glenfiddich. After an estimate of £30 - £50, the miniatures went under the hammer for £120.

Lot 43

Later on in the day we had 300 stunning lots of Victorian, Edwardian & Scottish Jewellery, with prices ranging from £30 - £8000. Again, some of the lots not only met the expectations held, but also surpassed them, like this beautiful Edwardian Opal and Diamond set clover brooch. After an estimation of £150, this ended up going for a whopping £1000.

Lot 202

The last auction of the day featured some out of the ordinary pieces of ceramic, works of art and jewellery. With various Art Deco pieces and even a Mulberry handbag this was a very enticing auction to be at. One particular piece that grabbed the attentions of bidders was this Ceiling lamp in the style of W.A.S Benson. After an estimated hammer price of £150 this unusual lamp sold for a fantastic £1100.

Lot 537

McTear's featuring Muriel Barclay

With McTear's April auctions coming up soon that feature some fantastic examples of Muriel Barclay’s work, we thought it would be a good idea to learn a bit more about her and her painting.

Growing up locally in Glasgow’s West End, Muriel started off at Edinburgh University where she went on to move down to London and work at Jaques O’Hana’s Gallery. On her return to Glasgow, Muriel studied Drawing and Painting at Glasgow School of Art and History of Fine Art, alongside teaching history and raising her three sons. In 2001 she finally left her textbooks and picked up her paintbrush to become a full time painter after encouragement from various Art Institutes.

Muriel paints with an extremely individualised style, influenced by her study of the history of art and culture. She is one of Scotland's best figurative artists who paints with an almost poetic style, capturing the image of her paintings exquisitely. Her work contains collections from portraits to horses, and from ballet dancers to flamenco dancers, all uniquely beautiful and quirky. Muriel has had her work exhibited at some of the best galleries including Thompson's Gallery (London) and Contemporary Fine Art Gallery (Eton) and currently has her solo show at The Lemond Gallery in Glasgow, which showcases some of the best examples of Scottish Contemporary Art.

McTear's are extremely lucky to be auctioning some of her fabulous work and in 2008 'Pink Tutu Tune' sold for £7645*, which was the highest price to be achieved at auction for a maiden painting in a public auction by any living Scottish artist.

The Scottish Contemporary Art Auction on Sunday 13th April includes some superb examples of Muriel’s work with estimates ranging from £400 to £4000.

Lot 1781: 'Finding Chord' Estimate: £3000 - £5000

Lot 1784: 'Pink Passage' Estimate: £400 - £600

With the success of her previous paintings, we cannot wait to see how Muriel's artwork does at our upcoming Scottish Contemporary Art Auction on the 13th of April.

Largest bottle of single malt in the world!

In our Rare and Collectable Whisky, Wine and Port auction that took place last week we were extremely fortunate to have this Tomintoul 14 year old 105.3L bottle of single malt go under the hammer - the largest in the world!

Lot 832: Tomintoul Single Malt Whisky

For the size of the bottle it was no surprise that it was estimated to go for at least £100,000, but with 105.3 Litres of single malt whisky it is definitely worth it. Created by The Clockhouse Restaurant and The Whisky Castle in Timontoul, it gained accreditation from The Guinness World Records for being the largest bottle of Single Malt in the world in 2009.

The bottle was on display at The Whisky Experience in Edinburgh, standing at 4ft 9ins it took 14 people to fill and close it, according to the BBC.

This video, sourced from YouTube, shows how the massive whisky bottle was filled.

Sadly the bottle never reached its estimate and has been returned to its owner. Steven McGinty, our whisky valuer commented: "It was unique but I'm not going to say I was disappointed because it will earn what the owners wanted under different circumstances. Today just wasn't the day when somebody felt inclined to bid for it." (The Herald)

History of Rolex... 'Inextricably linked to the visionary spirit of Hans Wilsdorf, its founder'

With a selection of fabulous Rolex watches going under the hammer in this weeks Watches and Coins auction, we thought it would be interesting to delve into the history of these world renowned timepieces.

The history of Rolex stems back to 1905 when the ‘visionary spirit’ of Hans Wilsdorf, its founder, evolved the idea of a watch being worn on the wrist. His vision, originating in London, saw that wristwatches had the potential to have more than just a functionality purpose; they could become both ‘elegant’ and ‘reliable’.

1908 saw the creation of the name and the brand as we know it today, Rolex. ‘Genius in five letters’ is how they described it. Having a name that was easily recognisable and transferable into different cultures and languages but what also looked attractive on the watch.

1910 saw Rolex’s first achievement. Their attention to detail and exceptionally precise timepiece granted them the Swiss Certificate of Chronometric Precision by the Official Watch Rating Centre. Then 1914 saw another achievement for Rolex when they were awarded a class “A” precision certificate and from then on Rolex were indistinguishable with perfectionism.

An example of an Oyster wrist watch in our Watches and Coins auction.

In 1926 and 1927 Rolex formed the waterproof watch and to justify this functionality they ventured on a ‘cross channel challenge’ and after a 10 hour swim the watch was still in pristine condition resulting in their claim shifting to proof.

Continuing with their innovation, 1953 saw the ‘pioneering watches being developed’ which included watches intended for professional services. Watches included ‘The Explorer’ for human adventure, ‘The Submariner’ for deep sea diving, ‘The GMT- Master’ for airline pilots, ‘The Oyster Perpetual Milgauss’ for the scientific community and many more in the years to come. In 1976, to celebrate 50 years of the Oyster, the Rolex Awards for Enterprise were launched to honour individuals who have the bravery and ambition to commence major challenges.

In 1985 Rolex went on to become the watch making brand to pioneer the use of 904L in their steel watches. The 21st century conceived the 4130 movement exclusively by Rolex which contains just 290 components, far less that a standard chronograph therefore enhancing the stylish, timeless and simplistic watches.

Another example of their precision in this 18 carat gold ladies wrist watch.

The most recent thing to happen, in ties with Rolex’s long history of sporting, Rolex entered into partnership with Formula 1 Racing as their Official Timekeeper and Official Timepiece.

Their history, timeless attention to detail and chronograph precision has meant that Rolex today remains the watch that people desire to have.

Information sourced from the Rolex website. Read more here Rolex History.

Our Watches and Coins auction tonight at 5pm features the above watches and plenty more 'timeless' pieces that may catch your eye.

Diamonds shine on...

It is a known saying that ‘Diamonds are a Girls Best Friend’ and to most ladies this is very true. But, what is it about the dazzling piece of jewellery that makes it so special?

First, let’s appreciate this stunning, dazzling diamond that is expected to become the world’s most expensive and valued jewel.

Source: The Daily Mail: £40m diamond set to become worlds most expensive jewel

The 56.90 carat 'Pink Star' is set to go for over £40million at a Sotheby’s auction next month in Geneva. According to BBC news the diamond, which was mined by De Beers in Africa in 1999, has received the highest possible colour and clarity rating from the Gemological Institute of America (GIA) so it is no surprise that there will be such a demand for this beautiful gem.

The name diamond comes from the Greek word "adamas", meaning indestructible, which embodies and portrays the toughness of the gem. The 4 C's, carat, cut, colour and clarity are the 4 descriptive characteristics of the gemstone and for being as beautiful as diamonds are, it is hard to believe that it really is quite a simple material of pure carbon. The sophistication of the cut and polish are what makes diamonds truly stand out and 'shine'.

The most common use for a diamond today would probably be the engagement ring. We have a romantic Austrian aristocrat, Archduke Maximilian, to thank for this when he decided to give his fiancée a diamond ring when he proposed to her in 1477 (Source: The Independent). However it has always been custom to wear the ring on the left index finger as it is thought that this is where a vein leads directly to the heart... How romantic!

There is not doubt that diamonds are a desirable piece of jewellery with timeless style and elegance. The example above just shows the exceptional value of diamonds, not only in their beauty, but their sheer quality and distinctions.

McTear's may not have a diamond quite as spectacular as the 'Pink Star', but there might be something that catches your eye in our Fine Jewellery auction on the 13th November 2013.

The Lord Provost's lunch in aid of the STV Appeal!

Who was lucky enough to be at the Lord Provost's lunch at Glasgow City Chambers this weekend?

Another event to fundraise money for The STV Appeal 2013 took place this weekend with great success raising £26,000 for the appeal. Our Brian from McTear's was there on the day helping out with the gavel. Over £2000 was paid for a Gerard Burns painting and £500 for a tour of STV with Sean Batty.

All in all it was a fantastic afternoon and with The STV Appeal 2013's live show happening this Friday it was another great contribution and fundraising event for the cause.

Coming up in June...

Over the week beginning 24th of June we will have a total of 9 auctions including Fine Jewellery, Rare and Collectable Whisky, Wine and Port, Silver including Scottish Provincial and The Scottish Contemporary art auction.

Who thought the day would come that we would be auctioning a genuine antique Fijian weapon of war? This unique weapon, with a tribal name 'Totokia', designed to drive a hole into the skull of the enemy was also believed to possess there own life force or ‘mana’, making them treasured objects in life or in death. They are highly sought after so we look forward to seeing what will happen in the Furniture, Clocks and works of art auction on Tuesday at 6pm.

Lot 364

Another lot coming up during the week will be the craftsmanship of Tain silver, made in Tain, Ross-shire. This particular piece, a pair of bud vases made by William Innes of Tain circa 1835 demonstrates the quality of Innes's work, from each delicately worked wavy rim to the chased foliate designs of each vase. It will be up for bidding on our Scottish Silver auction on Tuesday 25th at 10.30am.

Lot 7

Our Scottish Pictures auction on Thursday 27th at 6pm will also feature a beautiful item up for auction. This fine example of McTaggart’s mature oeuvre was painted in 1873 and 'The Sea Bird' is definitely one not to be missed in this upcoming auction.

Going Once...Going Twice...Gone!

With a little gap till our June auctions, we thought it would be interesting to have a look at the most expensive items sold at auction over the years.

Recently at McTear’s we were fortunate to be auctioning some of the fantastic work by Peter Howson which raised over £200,000. However, other items around the world have managed to reach much higher prices at auction.

It’s amazing what some people will pay for things at auction and these following items are just some of the best examples.

First of all the most expensive painting which was Pablo Picasso's Nude, Green Leaves and Bust that sold for $106.5million (£66million) in 2010 at Christie's auction house.

Source: Picasso's Nude, Green Leaves and Bust to be shown at Tate Modern

Next is the most expensive piece of clothing. Marlyn Monroe's famous 'Happy Birthday' serenade to President John F. Kennedy is one that has gone down in history and her flesh-coloured, curve-hugging, jewel-encrusted dress so tight and sheer that she was sewn into it, sold for a massive $1,267,500 in 1999.

Marilyn Monroe's "Happy Birthday Mr. President" Dress

The most expensive musical instrument sold in 2007 was this Guarneri del Gesù violin that sold for $3.9millon.

Guarneri del Gesù violin

We found this one very peculiar: The most expensive lock of hair. The company behind the Internet auction of such macabre memorabilia has made a small fortune selling the tresses of celebrities. To date, the most valuable one sold was that of Elvis Presley selling for $115,000 in 2002.

Tresses from Elvis Presley

Now for probably the coolest car we have ever seen, the 1957 Ferrari 250 Testa Rossa. Being the most expensive car sold at auction, this beauty reached a whopping $12.2million in 2009.

1957 Ferrari 250 Testa Rossa

If diamonds really are a girl's best friend, then this Wittelsbach diamond would be the best friend they could have. Selling for $23.4million in 2008 this diamond is the most expensive one sold to date.

McTear's next special auctions will begin on the 25th of June with British & Continental Ceramics & Glass.

May at McTear's

What a fantastic week for McTear's with various special auctions proving to be extremely successful causing great excitement and eager bidding amongst both those who attended but also those who never.

The auctions all contained an eclectic mix of worthy auction items including Jewellery, paintings, furniture and sculptures all of which are unique and command interest from our bidders.

Rocking on in our Furniture, Clocks and Works of Art auction was this Edwardian Gesso pine pedestal rocking horse originally retailed by Harrods of Knightsbridge. After getting an estimation of £500-£800, the horse ended up going under the hammer for a fantastic £2400 on Tuesday the 21st May.

Lot 375

For the Whisky lovers, on Wednesday the 22nd bidding commenced on lot 666 the Springbank Millennium Collection which included 6 different bottles along with the Millennium Collection miniature box set of 6 miniatures. After some keen bidding this lot managed to raise its maximum estimation of £4000.

Lot 666

In our Fine Jewellery auction we had many beautiful pieces up for grabs including some glittering diamond bracelets, rings and necklaces. In particular this outstanding diamond two stone ring which, after an estimation of £1000-£2000, exceeded its highest expected price reaching £6000.

Lot 1101

Fancy a cuppa? In our Asian Works of Art auction this unique Chinese silver teapot with bird and blossom decoration and branch finial sold for a fantastic £1500 after getting an estimation of £500-£800 last Thursday.

Lot 1428

These are only just a few of the items worth noting that went under the hammer over the course of last week. For full online catalogues and hammer prices have a look here.

For details of our upcoming June auctions that start on the 25th have a look at our website. McTear's look forward to seeing you there ready with your bidding hats on.

Spotlight on Sunday: Scottish Contemporary Art

Being the only auction house in the UK to provide a monthly sale dedicated to Scottish Contemporary Art, McTear’s unique auction on Sunday is set to be one to cause great interest.

It can’t be ignored that last months various auctions were both distinctive and in some cases record breaking! First of all was April’s Scottish Contemporary Art auction that saw a variety of special pieces going under the hammer including likes of John Bellany, Hamish MacDonald and Alison Watt OBE to name a few. Overall, the sale caught the eye of many keen bidders producing some fantastic results.

Lot 1687: John Bellany: Estimate: £700 - £1000 Hammer: £1100

Lot 1688: Hamish MacDonald: Estimate: £500 - £800 Hammer: £1600

Lot 1718: Alison Watt: Estimate: £8000 - £12000 Hammer: £7000

Then came the unforgettable Terry Howson Collection auction with almost 400 drawings, sketches and etchings by her former husband Peter Howson. It was questionable whether we would be able to fit such a massive sale in between April and May’s Scottish Contemporary Art auctions but with the effort and commitment of the McTear’s team “we worked something out”. It was not surprising that such a unique sale would have acquired such global interest especially with the pictures being sold at No Reserve with David Bowie fans competing to get that winning bid, the sale was a sell-out success.

Lot 56: Peter Howson OBE 'Monique' mixed media, signed and dated '07: Estimate: £200 - £500 Hammer: £2400

Lot 310: Peter Howson OBE 'The Man Who Fell To Earth' (The First Of The David Bowie Drawings): Estimate: £1000 - £2000 Hammer: £6000

This Sunday once again people will be eagerly watching and bidding as McTear's hold another Scottish Contemporary Art auction. After the Terry Howson collection last month this Sunday boasts an exciting array of Howson oils, from 1982 onwards. Other notable items going under the hammer include George Wyllie MBE and Jack Vettriano OBE.

Lot 1877: Peter Howson OBE 'The Justified Sinner': Estimate: £2000 - £3000

Lot 1889: George Wyllie MBE sculpture: Estimate: £500 - £1000

Lot 1902: Jack Vettriano OBE 'Letter of Consequence' oil on canvas: Estimate: £15000 - £20000

We are hoping that the upcoming Scottish Contemporary Art auction will be as successful as our previous ones and look forward to welcoming you there.

The Scottish Contemporary Art auction is this Sunday, 26th of May at 2pm.
