The Georgian period conjures up images of romantic poets, darling writers and sophisticated architecture and interiors. The paintings of Gainsborough, verses of Keats and the writings of Austen all personify the era for many of us today. The everyday sights and smells of Georgian life are not as well known. The Georgian Gentry, however, had a secret weapon to combat the less desirable sides to Georgian life, the vinaigrette snuff box. In this month’s sale we feature a rare silver vinaigrette box (Lot 1318) including its original sponge. Not only is the item a beautiful piece of decorative art, it also an interesting piece of social history.
