McTear's featuring Muriel Barclay

With McTear's April auctions coming up soon that feature some fantastic examples of Muriel Barclay’s work, we thought it would be a good idea to learn a bit more about her and her painting.

Growing up locally in Glasgow’s West End, Muriel started off at Edinburgh University where she went on to move down to London and work at Jaques O’Hana’s Gallery. On her return to Glasgow, Muriel studied Drawing and Painting at Glasgow School of Art and History of Fine Art, alongside teaching history and raising her three sons. In 2001 she finally left her textbooks and picked up her paintbrush to become a full time painter after encouragement from various Art Institutes.

Muriel paints with an extremely individualised style, influenced by her study of the history of art and culture. She is one of Scotland's best figurative artists who paints with an almost poetic style, capturing the image of her paintings exquisitely. Her work contains collections from portraits to horses, and from ballet dancers to flamenco dancers, all uniquely beautiful and quirky. Muriel has had her work exhibited at some of the best galleries including Thompson's Gallery (London) and Contemporary Fine Art Gallery (Eton) and currently has her solo show at The Lemond Gallery in Glasgow, which showcases some of the best examples of Scottish Contemporary Art.

McTear's are extremely lucky to be auctioning some of her fabulous work and in 2008 'Pink Tutu Tune' sold for £7645*, which was the highest price to be achieved at auction for a maiden painting in a public auction by any living Scottish artist.

The Scottish Contemporary Art Auction on Sunday 13th April includes some superb examples of Muriel’s work with estimates ranging from £400 to £4000.

A Taste of Scotland at McTear's

With July's special auctions just around the corner we are reflecting on some of the Scottish highlights from our June's special auctions... We have something for all 'tastes' at McTear's!

The Scottish Picture Auction on Thursday 27th June, offered a selection of pictures from Scotland's best known artists from the last 200 years. This favourable auction brings great interest and keen bidders. In particular, the signed oil canvas, named 'Girl With Ducks' from the Scottish Artist Annie Muirhead Paterson (1847-1947), will make a beautiful Scottish contribution to the successful bidder who won this canvas for the bid of £1700. From the traditional, to the more modern and 'interesting' type of artwork... The Scottish Contemporary Art Auction held on Sunday 30th June added a splash of unique taste. Check out the bird in this oil canvas titled 'The Voyagers' by John Bellany. This exquisite piece had a hammer price of £4800, and will certainly be a feature in the winning bidder's home. Back to Scottish tradition, on Wednesday 26th June at McTear's, this 1938 Single Highland malt whisky, 'The MacAllan' in a branded wooden box, estimated between £2000 and £3000 went under the hammer for an amazing £3400- just one of numerous fantastic bids in our 'Rare & Collectable Whisky, Wine and Port' Auction. We are sure this will be saved for a more than very special occasion!

Succesful October

What a fantastic result for our October dedicated auctions with special highlight to our Scottish Still Lifes, Fine & Contemporary Pictures and Whisky auctions that we had.

Featured in our previous post was the beautiful Pink Roses oil on canvas by Samuel John Peploe. Estimated to reach a significant £200,000 - £300,000 in our Scottish Still Lifes, Fine & Contemporary Pictures auction, it went under the hammer for a fantastic £185,000.

 

In The Chairman’s Collection - Fine Macallan auction we also had outstanding sales. In particular this Macallan Anniversary Malt 50 Year Old limited edition sold for £17,000 after an estimation of £8000-£10,000, a world record for this bottling.

'Pink Roses' by Saumel John Peploe

With an exciting week of auctions starting tomorrow, we thought it would be appropriate to highlight one fabulous piece we have coming up for sale.

With a fantastic valuation of £200k to £300k, this stunning 20 inch by 16 inch oil on canvas, ‘Pink Roses’, by Samuel John Peploe (1871-1935) will be the focal point of McTear’s Scottish Still Lifes, Fine & Contemporary Pictures Sale this Thursday, 25th October.

Lot 1545

Acquired 50 years ago in Glasgow by the late father of the Stirlingshire based seller, with an original price that “was not significant enough to remember”, did not make a great impression on his wife. After being sent out by his wife to buy a painting of some roses, she unfortunately didn’t like the piece and it was consigned to a spare room.

Commenting on the sale, Brian Clements, Managing Director at McTear’s Auctioneers, said: “Pink Roses is a stunning painting that shows Peploe at his very best.

“It may not have been to the original owner’s taste but judging from the interest that has been shown so far it is clear there are a number of collectors who are very impressed by this remarkable piece by one of Scotland’s most celebrated artists.”

Peploe was a Scottish Post Impressionist painter and, along with John Duncan Fergusson, Francis Cadell and Leslie Hunter, was a founding member of the group that became known as the Scottish Colourists. He is noted for his still life works which show the influence of Manet, with fluid brushwork, thick impasto and dark backgrounds with strong lighting.

Of the four Peploe still life examples which have sold at auction so far in 2012, prices achieved have averaged £394,250 (including buyers premium). Two of the four were the same size as ‘Pink Roses’ and the other two were slightly smaller.

Auction records also confirm that Peploe is considered to be the most valuable of the Scottish Colourists with the current record for his work established in May 2011 at £937,250 (including buyers premium) for ‘The Coffee Pot’. This also represents the highest price ever paid for a work by a Scottish artist at auction.

Pink Roses by Peploe

This beautiful oil on canvas by Samual John Peploe, Pink Roses, is coming up for sale on 25th October in McTear’s auction of ‘Scottish Still Lifes’.

Estimate: £200,000 - £300,000

Born in 1871, Peploe was a Scottish Post-Impressionist painter, famous for his still life pieces. He was also well known for being part of the group of four painters who were known as the 'Scottish Colourists'.  Studying in both Scotland and Paris, Peploe experimented with the bold use of colour inspired by the bright sunset and influenced by specific French Painters.

It was in 1910, when Peploe moved to Paris, that he started to pay more attention to still life and landscape painting with an amalgamation of fluid brushwork, thick impasto and dark backgrounds with strong lighting. Peploe continued painting when he returned to Scotland, going on regular painting trips with friends to various parts of Scotland.

Peploe sadly died in Edinburgh in 1935 but his paintings, with strong use of colour, tight composition and meticulous execution, are ones not to be missed.

One of Peploe's other paintings, Still Life with Coffee Pot, sold on 26 May 2011 at Christie's in London for £937,250, currently holds the record for one of the most expensive Scottish painting sold at auction.

Busy Week for McTears...

Next week is set to be a busy week for McTears and to finish March we have various auctions throughout the week with a range of exciting and unique pieces to be auctioned.

Our Fine and Contemporary Pictures auction on Tuesday 27th March will feature a variety of fine painting by predominantly Scottish artists of the last 200 years but it will also include a selection of contemporary pictures. The Carlops Village, watercolour on paper, painted by Sir William George Gillies is a fine example of the types of paintings that will be auctioned. Born in 1898 in Haddington, East Lothian, William began his artistic career at the Edinburgh College of Art in 1916. After graduating he went on to teach for 40 years at ECA and in 1922 founded an exhibition society, '1922'. 'Carlops Village' is a great portrayal of his style and use of more traditional painting with the linear composition and subtle colour palette.

 Our Furniture & Works of Art auction on Thursday 29th March will also feature fine and unique pieces of furniture and works of art from the 18th-20th centuries. With the 100th anniversary of Titanic's fateful voyage approaching, McTears is delighted to offer a stunning model of ship in this auction. To date, the Titanic's tragic story still remains in the public eye and heart and this intricate model is sure to attract much attention.

Mctear's Scottish Contemporary Art Auction

This specialist sale on Tuesday 21st February is dedicated to contemporary pictures and will feature outstanding examples from many of Scotland's most prominent and collectable living artists.

McTear's Scottish Contemporary Art Auctions are held every ten weeks and feature approximately 400 paintings from private collectors as well as brand new work from selected artists. This unique format was started in 2008 and soon established McTear’s as the single largest outlet in the world for contemporary Scottish paintings.
